God has gifted each of us with unique talents and abilities to meet the needs of the world. However, many of us fail to identify, develop and utilize our gifts in purposeful roles. We become complacent in jobs that we don’t like. We refuse to step outside of our comfort zones. We allow fear to hinder us from growth and development opportunities. The end result is a list of hopes and dreams that fails to come to fruition.

So then the question becomes, when are you willing to take the necessary steps to live a purposeful life? Is it when you reach a certain age? Getting older isn’t promised? Is it when you attain a milestone job? Jobs are being eliminated every day. Is it when your children are grown? Children take at least 18 years or more to mature. Are you willing to wait that long to pursue your passions and ambitions?

Today, I challenge you to take the first step towards living a purposeful life by consulting with a Life Purpose Coach. I’ll walk you through a 4 step process to identify and overcome the barriers that are hindering you from achieving your dreams and passions. Don’t allow another day to go by without passionately seeking to identify and utilize the many talents that God has gifted you with.

A life without purpose is barren. Seek purpose so that you may bear much fruit.

We often judge others on the decisions they make, whether good or bad.  However, I’m finding that it’s hard for us to really know what we would do in a similar situation until the instance occurs.  Sometimes our best judgment is hindered because of personal need or desire.  Other times, we fail to think about the potential impact of our decisions on others.

I was recently on a small shopping venture.  For some reason, yellow has become this year’s favorite spring color.  As a result, I was on a hunt to find a yellow jacket and blouse.  After some weeks of browsing stores, I finally found a boutique with both items.  In good shopping fashion, I also found a cute pair of shorts to add to my purchase.

When I approached the check-out counter, the sales associate rang up my items.  For some reason, the purchase amount seemed lower than expected.  I initially disregarded the purchase price, because it’s not out of the ordinary for this particular store to have additional discounts.  However, when I reviewed the receipt after leaving the store, I realized that the sales associate only rang up two of three items purchased.

My initial instinct was to go back into the store to have the sales associate ring up the third item.  Then my mind starting rationalizing the fact that it wasn’t my fault that the sales associate failed to ring up the item.  Maybe this was a blessing from God.  Yep, I said it, “maybe it was a blessing from God.”  Now, we all know that the right thing to do was to go back to the sales associate to have her ring up the item that she missed.  However, I chose to drive home with my three items.

On the drive home, the conviction started sinking in.  As a result, I thought that it would be a good idea to call a few good friends and get their feedback. Maybe, I was reading too much into this situation. Well, all of my friends agreed that the free item had to be returned to the store for purchase.  Of course, I knew the answer to this question before I posed it to my friends, but I found it hard initially to do the right thing.

The next day I returned to the store.  The sales associate couldn’t believe that I actually came back to the store to have the blouse rung it.  She thanked me for my honesty and applied a 20% discount to the blouse and gave me a free recycle bag.  In addition, the two items that I had previously purchased were an additional percentage off.  So, it all worked out in the end.  However, I couldn’t help but be disappointed in myself for not doing the right thing initially.

This was a critical life lesson for me.  Sometimes we need to take a step back before we judge the actions of others.  If placed in a similar situation, we just may not do the right thing.

This weekend I got the opportunity to visit Klyde Warren Park in downtown Dallas. This park is one of my favorite recreational destinations because it has children’s parks, fun activities for adults such at fitness camps, unique food trucks and great restaurants. While I love this park, it’s always a bit of a challenge to find parking because of its proximity to downtown Dallas. As a result, I paid $10 to park in a lot that was approximately 5 minutes from the park.

While I was parking, I noticed an elderly disabled lady using what appeared to a walker to head towards the park. She was by herself and didn’t seem dismayed by the distance ahead of her. As she slowly approached the intersection and waited for the crosswalk green light, she didn’t seem to care about the length of time it was taking her to cross the road. Unfortunately, drivers seemed to become inpatient by her slow stride and one driver even had the audacity to blow his horn. I was rather irritated by the driver’s horn. I mean really. Have some compassion for the elderly.

Once the elderly lady reached the other side of the road, I noticed a small family gathered around her. The lady was actually pushing a small cart with a cooler attached to it. Unfortunately, the cooler had fallen off the cart and its contents had spilled on the ground. This small family had stopped to help the lady and eventually picked up the cooler and took it to her final park destination. I remembered thinking, “Wow, this elderly lady who was barely walking didn’t let a minor disability hinder her from enjoying a beautiful day at the park”. She didn’t care that is was 91 degrees. She didn’t care that she had to cross a busy street. She didn’t care that she was alone. She was focused on spending an enjoyable day the park, despite any obstacles.

Would you be this diligent in pursuing your goals? Would you be able to overcome unforeseen barriers to achieve your objectives? Is your final destination worth more than your physical journey?

Have you ever asked yourself “How did I get here?” Maybe your “here” is a dead-end job that you’ve been in for several years. Or maybe your “here” is a few extra pounds that seem to keep piling on. Or just maybe, your “here” is a financial crisis in the midst of an economic downturn. Whatever your “here” is, it’s time to face it head on.

So, how did you get here? There could be several reasons.

  1. You felt that it was easier to stay in your current situation versus taking actions to change it.
  2. You had so many things going on that you neglected to see the negative impact over time.
  3. You failed to limit or let go of things that you enjoyed, even though you were aware of the potential risks.
  4. You felt that you couldn’t achieve your desired state.
  5. You chose to ignore the warning signs.
  6. You didn’t want to get out of your comfort zone.
  7. You didn’t ask for help.

If you can relate to any of the above reasons, then you now have a unique opportunity to transform your undesirable situation to a place of fulfillment. Take advantage of a free 30 minute coaching session with a Certified Life Purpose Coach®. I’ll walk you through a 4 step process to discovery the source of your “here”, identify transition barriers and to develop a purposeful action plan.

As a Life Coach, I am called to partner with clients to assist them in achieving personal goals, and making successful career transitions. I also help clients identify what they were created to do, so that they can operate in their unique purpose. This is a very rewarding role as I walk clients through a journey of discovery, identity and expectation.

Initially, clients are excited about the prospect of gaining insight and mentorship that can help them in their pursuits. However, this feeling can be short-lived when fears associated with self-examination and self-reflection begin to surface. The possibility of determining self-inflicted barriers to their goals or calling becomes a harsh reality that some have a hard time confronting.

It’s normally at this point, that I share some of my own personal obstacles and how I was able to overcome them. I then explain the limitations that would have been placed on my life had I not been willing to accept my role in the situation. As a final step, I stress the importance of what was learned from each situation. Challenges build endurance, fortitude and resilience. Personal challenges build character, compassion and reliance on God. Tests become awesome testimonies.

Consider a Life Coach and embark on journey of self-discovery, awareness and purpose.
